Stairs

The stairs took Andrew some serious thinking. He devoted half an afternoon to thinking and drawing them out on the floor with a chalk line. As soon as the wood was delivered Andrew got busy building our staircase…after coming up with a design all of us really wanted to see it done. Andrew thought that the “landing” would be the hardest, so he decided to build that first and then do the rest of the stairs. The “landing” actually was the easiest; Andrew was really stumped on the stairs that lead up to the “landing”. Just when he needed a little help from someone who knows about stairs Matt Thayer decided to come over; perfect timing! He was a great help and we really appreciated the time he spent helping Andrew. I wasn’t there to get any pictures except the finished project but Andrew, who’s insistent that there will be pictures of each and everything thing, took some on his phone…..        

The “landing”….This was going to be a full landing but after Andrew did the math he had to add another stair. Andrew’s first idea was looked down on and pronounced unsafeJ, so he added the triangle on the right. To be honest looking at the drawing I thought it looked rather odd and out of place; like someone forgot the other side. I suggested adding another one on the left; it would make our steps shorter and give it a completed look. Andrew loved the idea and immediately added another line on the floor, Dad didn’t care either way but mom wasn’t so sure. She wanted a full landing for safety but we talked her into itJ. “The stairs are really wide there, it’s almost like a landing; if someone starts falling it very well could stop them; and look mom not everyone has stairs like these and you like to be different; not have what everyone else has”. And so we have a “winding landing”; it wasn’t too hard to get moms approvalJ.
